Understand cover / Practical guide

Mileage tracking is not the same as a driving score.

Understand what is measured, how it is collected and what decisions it can affect.

The key distinction

Ask three separate questions: what data is collected, how it reaches the insurer, and what it is used for. “No black box”, “no score” and “pay-per-mile” answer different questions.

A measurement method is not a pricing rule.

The Financial Ombudsman Service describes telematics policies using devices or smartphone apps, with data potentially affecting continued cover, monthly premiums or renewal prices. The precise use depends on the policy. [1]

For your research, split the description into collection, measurement and decision. Collection could involve a device or a connection. Measurement could involve distance, timing or driving events. The decision might concern billing, eligibility or price. Do not infer the third item from a short description of the first.

Read “no score” carefully.

Jurny says there is no driver score, while its FAQ also says driving data can inform renewal and mid-term pricing. This is why the directory does not turn “no score” into a promise of no driving-data use. [2]

The useful question is what the current documents say about each data field and each purpose. Request clarification of unclear wording before proceeding. A customer dashboard may show only part of what a business collects; conversely, a capability of a device does not prove that every available field is used for a particular policy.

Make a small data-use checklist.

ABI guidance notes that telematics arrangements can involve device costs, specialist service companies and data about other drivers using the vehicle. Treat these as items to investigate rather than features shared by every product. [3]

Questions to take away

  • Which data fields are collected, and from which device or connected service?
  • Does the data affect today’s bill, future pricing, eligibility or claims handling?
  • What is required from additional drivers?
  • What happens when a device, phone, account connection or odometer reading fails?
  • Who can view the records, how are errors challenged and what happens after cancellation?

A worked reading exercise.

Imagine one leaflet saying “miles checked automatically” and another saying “no driver rating shown”. Neither statement tells you whether location data is collected, whether a missing connection creates a problem or whether renewal pricing uses journey information. Record those as unanswered questions, not “no”.

If you dispute a score or a data-based policy decision, preserve the relevant readings, correspondence and dates. The Ombudsman’s telematics page explains its complaints process; this directory cannot decide whether a particular insurer acted fairly. [1]
